Produced by Pac-A-Lite Mfg. Co., Mount Morris, MI
Following the success of its Mini-Mount conversion kit for powering Thimble Drome Champion toy race cars, Pac-A-Lite Mfg. Co. introduced the .19-size Scat Cat early in 1949, followed by the introduction of the .29-sized Scat Cat 29 in mid-August of 1949. Similar in design, the Scat Cat 29 was essentially a scaled-up version of the smaller Scat Cat.
Many of the components used to complete both versions were included with the Mini-Mount conversion kits which Pac-A-Lite had introduced a year earlier. For example, the rear axle assembly, including the rear axle, precision bearings, rear axle bearing caps, axle collars, and 3-inch diameter Veco rear tires and wheels were also included in the Mini-Mount conversion kit. Similarly, the front axle assembly, including the ball bearing equipped machined aluminum front wheels and knife-edge tires were also available with the Mini-Mount kit.
Pac-A-Lite also offered a custom-built fuel tank, fabricated from sheet copper for both the Scat Cat and the Scat Cat 29. In addition, Pac-A-Lite would even provide custom-built engines for the cars so that a complete turn-key car was available for those individuals who wanted to purchase a competitive tether car which required no additional work to finish.
The car shown in the photos is such a car which was purchased as a completely finished car by a member of the Indianapolis Mite Racing Club and was raced on the club's track located in Broad Ripple Park.
